Editorial Standards & Methodology
TaxFightBack exists to make property tax assessments and appeals easier to understand. Homeowners decide whether and how to protest real tax bills based on what they read here, so we hold our content to a clear standard for sourcing, accuracy, and honesty. This page explains exactly how we work.
Last reviewed August 13, 2026. We review this policy at least twice a year.
Our commitment in one sentence
We explain assessment and appeal procedures accurately, cite the county office, state agency, or published standard behind each rule, and never invent a deadline, a fee, a savings figure, a statistic, or a person.
Where our information comes from
Property tax rules are set at the county and state level, so government sources are our foundation. When we describe a requirement, we work from the material that actually governs it:
- County assessor and appraisal district pages: assessment notices, protest forms, filing deadlines, and hearing procedures.
- The published procedures of county appeal boards, boards of equalization, and the state-level review bodies that hear appeals after them.
- State department of revenue and taxation materials on assessment ratios, exemptions, and appeal rights.
- Uniform assessment standards published by the International Association of Assessing Officers, which many assessment offices reference in their own practice.
- Public property records and the assessment and sales data that counties themselves publish, which is the raw material behind comparable-sales evidence.
Where a claim depends on an outside source, we link to a primary reference, favoring official .gov pages so you can read the rule at its source and confirm it yourself.
Why we never estimate your savings
You will not find a savings guarantee, an average-savings marketing statistic, or a projected reduction anywhere on this site. Every appeal turns on one question, how your assessment compares to the evidence, and the answer belongs to your county board, not to us. An appeal can end with a lower value, and it can also end with no change at all. We would rather tell you that plainly than sell you a number we cannot stand behind.
How we handle facts that vary by county
Filing windows, protest forms, evidence rules, and hearing formats differ from county to county and state to state, and many change every year. Rather than print a single date or procedure that would be wrong somewhere, we mark a county's specific facts as verified only when we have read them directly from that county's or state's official source. For every place we have not verified yet, our guides and tools give you an honest framework and the exact questions to ask your assessor's office instead of a guess dressed up as a fact.
Who writes and reviews our content
Our articles are researched, written, and edited by the TaxFightBack Editorial Team, a group of writers and researchers who focus on property tax assessment and appeals. Every article carries this team byline and a published or updated date.
We are deliberate about what we are not. We are not attorneys, CPAs, licensed appraisers, or registered tax agents, and we do not publish content under invented expert names or fabricated professional credentials. When a decision calls for licensed judgment, such as a formal appraisal or representation at a hearing, we say so and point you to a qualified professional or your county's procedures instead of pretending to be one.
How we keep content current
Each article shows when it was published and, when applicable, when it was last updated. We revisit content on a rolling basis and when we learn that a deadline, form, or procedure has changed. Assessment calendars still move faster than any publisher can track perfectly, so a date on this site tells you when we last reviewed a page, not that a rule has not changed since. Always confirm current deadlines and procedures with your county before you act.
Corrections and feedback
If you spot something that looks out of date or wrong, tell us and we will check it against the source and fix it promptly. Accurate content is more valuable to us than being right the first time, and reader corrections make this resource better for the next homeowner.
Email corrections to team@taxfightback.com with the page URL and what you believe should change.
What we will never publish
- Invented facts, made-up statistics, or citations to sources that do not say what we claim.
- Savings guarantees, projected reductions, or average-savings claims we cannot source.
- County deadlines, fees, forms, or procedures that we have not confirmed at the official source.
- Comparable-sales packets presented as appraisals, or legal and tax advice dressed up as information.
- Fabricated homeowner testimonials, success stories, reviews, or ratings.
Independence and how we pay for this
TaxFightBack is an independent information publisher. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or acting on behalf of any county assessor, appraisal district, appeal board, or state agency. Our free guides and tools are supported by our flat-fee appeal packets and the optional Assessment Watchmonitoring service. We never take a percentage of anyone's savings, appealing on your own is free in most counties apart from any filing fee your county sets, and buying from us is never required. A purchase never changes what an assessor or board decides.
